South Dakota Pheasant Hunting

Our Pheasant Hunt Technique

We start our Pheasant hunts at 10am on the first day of the SD pheasant hunting season. You and your group will be walking food plots, corn strips, river timber and rougher areas as well during your hunt. 

Hunters will line up, spread out evenly on each side of the strip with a wing man. We’ll box the birds in with blockers at the ends as the wing guy and blockers move up and surround the pheasants. 

This technique is important as pheasants prefer to run rather than fly. When we surround the birds with our blockers and wing man, we usher the birds toward the end of a field and flush them out with the dogs, giving you ample access to a successful hunting expedition.

Pheasants like to travel over various types of habitat, and as such you can expect to do the same on our hunts. Transition areas where one type of habitat meets another are especially valuable pheasant hunting areas, and the Perry River Ranch provides many of these transition areas within our ranch.

Our goal every day of your hunt is to get each hunter in your group their daily limit, so be prepared to take your shot and to experience the unpredictable South Dakota weather during the Lyman County pheasant hunting season. 

Once back at the ranch, you’ll clean and prep your pheasants or there are options for bird cleaning once you arrive. Ask about that during booking! 

Note that there is a minimum group size of 10 due to the size of our plots and strips that we hunt. Having enough people to surround the birds increases our chances at achieving our daily limit. 

South Dakota Pheasant Season Dates

The South Dakota Traditional Pheasant season begins October 19th 2024 and runs through January 31st 2025. The daily limit is 3 rooster pheasants per hunter per day.
